A Victoria's Secret Model Used Instagram To Deflect A Potential Drug Scandal

Cara Delevingne

A few days ago, the paparazzi photographed Victoria's Secret model Cara Delevingne dropping a bag of "mysterious white powder" outside her apartment.

Pictures showed the model trying to cover the bag with her shoe and handbag and laughing.

The incident might have put 20-year-old Delevingne's career in jeopardy. Brands like Victoria's Secret and H&M have used her to market lines for teens, and a drug scandal would tarnish her image.

H&M also fired spokeswoman Kate Moss for being busted with cocaine in 2005.

The brand was reportedly "investigating" the incident with Delevingne, but never took action.

Why wasn't Delevingne vilified like Moss?

Kat Stoeffel at The Cut has some ideas

First, Delevingne's snafu occurred the day before the Met Gala. The event was covered by virtually all major news outlets, meaning that the press and public were distracted.

But Delevingne took things a step further to ensure that no one was paying attention to that little bag of white powder.

She posted an Instagram photo of herself locking lips with actress Sienna Miller:

sienna miller cara delevingne kissing

The sexy image went viral and dominated headlines from the event.

By Tuesday, no one cared about the white powder incident at all.

What A Straight Man Learned From Working At Victoria's Secret

christopher pilny

In 2010, college student Chris Pilny ditched his plan to go to dental school and got a job at Victoria's Secret

His life had hit rock bottom after his girlfriend dumped him.

"Desperate to regain my swagger, I decided I needed to study women, to go somewhere I could immerse myself in them," Pilny said.

So Pilny filled out an application and became one of the very few men to work retail at the lingerie powerhouse (more than 90% of Victoria's Secret employees are women). He worked there for more than a year, learning the ins-and-outs of women's underwear.

We asked Pilny, who now works as a writer and humorist, about what it's like for a straight man to work at Victoria's Secret.

Business Insider: Why don't you think a lot of men work at VS?

Chris Pilny: Applying for a job at Victoria’s Secret is essentially like buying condoms. Except that, instead of being able to pretend like you’re looking at candy bars while you throw the box at the cashier, you’re looking at a (usually female) manager, telling them you’d like to sell women’s undergarments for a living. It’s nerve-racking, to say the least.

The thing that men need to remember is that Victoria’s Secret was a company founded by a man (Roy Raymond) as a place for men to go and comfortably shop for lingerie for their wives/girlfriends. Though their marketing has changed since that point, men need not to feel like perverts if they want to go in there, or work there. It’s a job just like any other. It has its benefits and it has its downsides.

BI: How did friends and family react when you told them your plans?

CP: Pretty well. My parents watched me change majors seven times in five years. By that point, they looked at me and said, “Well, we can’t say we saw this coming, but it kinda makes sense you’d end up selling bras when you look at the past couple years.”

BI:Did you ever meet any potential dates at work?

CP: I did. I was putting some beauty products away one afternoon when this girl and her friend walked up. I asked them a pretty standard retail question. “Is there anything I can do for you today?” One of them turned towards me and said, “Take me to a dinner and a movie.” We exchanged numbers and it was set.

Now, I never did take her on a date. She wasn’t my type. I just wanted to see if a woman would really give her number to a man working at Victoria’s Secret. The answer is, yes.

BI:What surprised you about working at Victoria's Secret?

CP: That women would still date me. A few days after I’d applied, a friend said to me, “You do realize you’re going to be single the entire time you work there, right? No woman is going to date a guy who sells thongs for a living!”

In my stunned, semi-depressed silence, I had to admit she was right. What woman in her right mind would date a guy who works at Victoria's Secret? Lack of income aside, it was the closest thing you could get to dating a gigolo. Only Tom Jones and Wilt Chamberlin had handled more panties than I had.

It turns out, however, that girls will date a guy who works at Victoria's Secret. I'm still not sure if it’s because they liked me or my panty discount, but I didn't really care. I could spend my days advising 40 different women which panties they should buy, then go home at night to a girl who thought nothing of it. What else could you ask for as man?

BI: What do you think is something smart VS does as a business?

CP: They make sure their employees are well-versed in the product. Yeah, it might have taken me six months to learn all of the bras in the store, but that's what happens as a man. You have no freaking clue what you’re looking at it. It could be a Very Sexy push-up; it could be a Nakeds demi; it could be a Cottons full coverage; or it could simply be a double-pouched water balloon launcher.

BI:What do you think VS could do to improve its business?

CP: I mean, what do you say about a man whose net worth is $4.5 billion? I think Les Wexner (chairman and CEO of Limited Brands, Victoria's Secret's parent company) is doing a great job.

The problem that Victoria’s Secret faces is the same problem that all retail companies face: customer satisfaction.

Sometimes I found managers applied rules (in regards to customer returns, etc.), and others they didn’t. It was frustrating as an employee, and when I got in a scuff with my store manager about it, she said to me, “The only rule is this: the customer needs to be satisfied.”

You bet I gave away a lot of free stuff after that.

BI:How did your job at VS change your life?

Pilny: It changed my perception of women forever, specifically how they communicate with one another. As a man, you naively assume that every interaction you have with a woman is going to remain in a vacuum.

I only assumed this because that’s how men communicate — in swaths; and I’m not sure why I even still believed this at the time. I’d had inside information for years that women, when left alone, get down to the nitty gritty.

Working at Victoria’s Secret didn’t necessarily make me better with women, it simply brought my image of them into a more realistic and startling focus.

Former Victoria's Secret Model Reveals Why She Gave Up Lingerie Modeling For Jesus

kylis bisutti victorias secretFormer Victoria's Secret model Kylie Bisutti just released a book about leaving the brand because of her Christian beliefs.

Bisutti told The Daily Beast about the incidents that spurred her leaving.

"Already married for a few months, Bisutti wrote that 'Victoria’s Secret execs e-mailed to tell me that I’d caught the eye of one of the celebrities at the after party,'" reports The Daily Beast. "She says she refused the invitation, citing devotion to her husband."

She's also said that she was encouraged to downplay her marriage and act flirtatious.

“As I continued modeling lingerie, my convictions grew about wanting to honor my husband and our marriage and not having other men see me in lingerie, and also my desire to be a better role model for girls everywhere,” she told The Daily Beast.

Las Vegas-based Bisutti won a contest to walk in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in 2009. The gig led to a contract with IMG Models.

But after walking in the show, she says she realized that wearing lingerie for the masses was disrespectful to her husband.

Now, she's devoted her life to her Christian beliefs.

Victoria's Secret didn't respond to the Daily Beast's request for comment.

However, the brand slammed Bisutti last month, saying that her book exaggerated her involvement.

"She was never a Victoria’s Secret ‘Angel,’" the company said in the statement.

"And contrary to Ms. Bisutti’s claims, she was never offered any subsequent modeling contracts or opportunities with Victoria’s Secret despite her multiple appeals for further work."

Bisutti admits that she does still shop at the retailer.

Victoria's Secret Eats Humble Pie And Re-Hires Kate Upton

Kate Upton for Victoria's Secret

She's "too obvious,""too blonde" and has the "kind of face that anyone with enough money can go out and buy."

That's what Victoria's Secret casting director Sophia Neophitou, said of Kate Upton in an interview with the New York Times last year, claiming the underwear brand "would never use [her]."

This year, however, the lingerie company seems to have changed its tune regarding the conventionally appealing swimsuit star and have put Upton in its latest catalog. She models the brand's best-selling black Body bra.

It is not surprising that Victoria's Secret have "had to rethink their opinion on the model. After all, as the New York Post reports, Upton's popularity has tripled over the past year.

The lingerie giant previously hired Upton to model the brand's pajamas in 2011. Take a look below.

Victoria's Secret Used Kate Upton's Old Pictures Without Telling Her And She Is Furious

Kate Upton

Yesterday, we noted how weird it was that Kate Upton would model for Victoria's Secret after the company's casting director had bad-mouthed the model, calling her "too obvious," and looking too much like a "footballer's wife."

Today, the truth surfaced.

In spite of her image being used in the latest Victoria's Secret catalog, Upton has not resurrected her relationship with the lingerie brand. Nor is she becoming its next Angel.

As The New York Post reports, the photo in question was not a recent one. The image of Upton showcasing the brand's Body bra in the catalog was taken during a previous shoot, when Upton was modeling for Victoria's Secret in 2011.

To add insult to injury, a source for the Post confirmed that "VS never gave her a heads-up they were using the pictures now."

"Kate’s not currently contracted to work with Victoria’s Secret," the source added.

Apparently, the blonde bombshell is furious. But it's most likely that she is not entitled to take legal action.

Victoria's Secret probably did a "buyout" of the images they took of the model in 2011, giving the brand unlimited use of the pictures.

That puts VS in the position of being able to criticize Upton at the same time as using her to sell its old stock.

Man Raises $8.5 Million For Victoria's Secret Killer, AdoreMe, Which Sells Half-Price Lingerie

AdoreMe lingerie models

AdoreMe is a fast-growing lingerie startup that has raised an $8.5 million Series B round of financing from Upfront Ventures, Mousse Partners and Redhills Ventures. And although the intimates and swim wear site looks just like Victoria's Secret, it wasn't created by a woman.

Morgan Hermand-Waiche's family runs a fashion business in France. So when he was at Harvard Business School and recognized a pain point women face while lingerie shopping, it wasn't hard for him to create AdoreMe.

"I frequently heard friends and family complain about how there needed to be a better option for buying lingerie in the U.S.," Hermand-Waiche tells Business Insider. "People are so tired of high prices and slow-fashion from Victoria's Secret."

AdoreMe is a vertically-integrated e-commerce startup. It feels a lot like Victoria's Secret, down to the black and hot pink font, bikini shots on beaches, and perfectly sculpted models. But unlike Victoria's Secret, the prices are unbelievably cheap. A woman's first matching lingerie set is sold for $20 and $39.95 after that. Shipping is free in the U.S. although AdoreMe's products ship all over the world. A Victoria's Secret bra alone costs at least $40.

It's difficult to know if AdoreMe's low price point is sustainable but the fact that it's owning the supply chain and has no storefronts helps. Its lingerie is all unique to the site so it can't be bought elsewhere. AdoreMe works with suppliers and manufacturers which allows its staff to edit, alter and improve all of the pieces. It's also working on an in-house collection.

"I knew there was a huge opportunity in using ZARA’s fast fashion model and applying it to intimates," Hermand Waiche says. ZARA is a European brand that resembles H&M, Express or Forever 21. Recently it has gained popularity in the States and it's known for being affordable and fashion-forward.

"By offering designer-crafted lingerie at an incredible price and with the convenience of online shipping we're quickly chipping away at Victoria's Secret's market share."

He says the company shipped 100,000 items before its first birthday. The company is less than two years old and investors are optimistic, even though other competitors in the startup space such as True & Co already exist.

"When we saw the growth numbers combined with the quality of Adore Me’s products we knew we had found a category killer,” Upfront Ventures' founding partner Yves Sisteron says in a release.

Police were still investigating the incident as of Tuesday.

Adam Levine Engaged To Victoria's Secret Model Behati Prinsloo

Adam Levine Behati PrinslooMaroon 5 frontman and "The Voice" mentor Adam Levine, 34, and Victoia's Secret Angel Behati Prinsloo, 24, split ways in late spring after briefly dating but have apparently had a change of heart.

On Tuesday, the couple confirmed not only were they on-again, but they're engaged.

"Adam Levine and his girlfriend Behati Prinsloo are excited to announce they are engaged to be married," Levine's rep confirmed to People. "The couple recently reunited and Adam proposed this weekend in Los Angeles."

The surprise announcement left fans scratching their heads, as just a few weeks ago Levine was photographed on a beach vacation with 21-year-old model Nina Agdal.

"The Nina thing was not that serious and was not going to last," one source explains to Us Weekly. "After Adam broke up with Behati, he couldn't stop thinking about her. He realized he really loved her and wanted to be with her."

After parting ways with Agdal, Levine "got back with Behati right away," said the Us source, and proposed to the Namibia-born model over the weekend.

The newly engaged couple celebrated their wedding plans on Tuesday with dinner at Peels restaurant in NYC. The couple ordered burgers and champagne and "canoodled in the booth" before leaving a "100 percent tip" on their $50 restaurant bill.

"I'm a fan of marriage. People think that I keep pooh-poohing marriage, but I love it,"Levine said on "Oprah's Next Chapter" in June. "I want to probably be married at some point."

He added, "I don't feel pressure to get married. I think that when it's time, it's going to be obvious and I'm going to do it and I'm going to really enjoy it."

Apparently when Levine rekindled his romance with Prinsloo, it was "obvious."

Perhaps it had something to do with these photos of Prinsloo strutting down the Victoria's Secret catwalk:

A luxury British shirt maker called Pink is suing Victoria's Secret for infringement.

London-based Thomas Pink filed the suit against the British arm of Victoria's Secret in May, alleging that the name of the brand's teen line is confusing to customers, Vogue reports.

"Thomas Pink is determined to protect the considerable investment that has been made into building the world's luxury leading shirt brand," a spokesperson told Vogue.

Now Victoria's Secret is fighting back. Last week the lingerie brand filed a declaratory judgment suit in the U.S., seeking to to establish "the rights of the parties, allowing them to continue the peaceful coexistence that has been in place for many years," according to Vogue.

The teen line has seen wild success in recent years, leading the brand to open standalone stores around the world. Victoria's Secret just launched two standalone Pink stores in London.

Victoria's Secret hasn't commented on the suit.

gisele bundchen

Gisele Bündchen wiped the floor — er, runway — with her fellow supermodels on Forbes' list of World's Highest-Paid Models.

Bündchen, 32, holds the top spot for the seventh year in a row, earning seven times as much as second-place earner, Miranda Kerr, according to Forbes.

The Victoria's Secret model made $42 million in the last year, thanks to a partial stake in a Brazilian footwear company, Grendene, sales from her eco-friendly cosmetics company, Sejaa, and multi-year contracts with international campaigns with Pantene, Oral-B and Sky HDTV.

Bündchen and quarterback husband Tom Brady welcomed a daughter this year.

The list included seven Victoria's Secret Angels, including the brand's longest-running model and first model of Chinese descent.

Angel Miranda Kerr leapt five spots up the ranks, due in part from her expanding international portfolio.

New to the list is Puerto Rican model Joan Smalls, who posed for Chanel, Lacoste, and Calvin Klein Jeans and became the first Latina ambassador for Estee Lauder in 2011.

Here's the complete list of Forbes' Highest-Paid Models:

1. Gisele Bündchen — $42 million

2. Miranda Kerr — $7.2 million

3. Adriana Lima — $6 million

4. Kate Moss — $5.7 million

5. Liu Wen — $4.3 million

6. Hilary Rhoda — $4 million

7. Carolyn Murphy — $3.6 million

8. Joan Smalls — $3.5 million

9. Candice Swanepoel — $3.3 million

10. Lara Stone — $3.2 million

Gisele Bündchen was just named the highest-paid supermodel by Forbes

Bündchen, known in the industry as simply "Gisele," has held the title for the past seven years

She earned a stunning $42 million last year. That's way ahead of second highest-paid model Miranda Kerr, who raked in $7.2 million.

But before she was a one-woman empire, Gisele was an awkward teenager in Brazil with modest aspirations.

We chronicled how she broke into the scene and became a legend.

Gisele was born in Brazil, but her parents are of German descent. Here she's pictured (center) with her fraternal twin, Patricia, and another sister, Gabi.

Gisele was discovered by a modeling scout in Brazil while eating a Big Mac. Her childhood nickname was "Olive Oyl," a reference to cartoon "Popeye's" gangly wife. She won a contest and was sent to Sao Paulo. Here she's pictured in a 1995 interview telling the station about how she hoped to break into the business.

Why The Lingerie Industry Can't Compete With Victoria's Secret

$
0
0

victoria's secretVictoria's Secret is facing a deluge of competition from lingerie start-ups that seek to challenge the brand.

Brands like AdoreMe, Intimint, and True & Co. are trying to seduce Victoria's Secret customers with lower prices and more tailored selections.

AdoreMe offers direct-to-consumer lingerie at about half of Victoria's Secret prices.

Intimint asks customers to take a quiz and sends them new lingerie selections every month, based on their preferences. True & Co. sends women five bras a month, giving them the option of keeping what they like and sending back what they don't.

While these brands are consumer-friendly and creative, their business models ignore exactly what makes Victoria's Secret so successful.

In the '90s, Victoria's Secret used to focus on value. But the brand floundered because there was nothing to set it apart from other price-friendly brands like Hanes and Maidenform.

Victoria's Secret didn't start dominating lingerie until it stopped being cheap and began focusing on the customer experience.

Stores were redesigned with soft, pink wallpaper and inviting fitting rooms. Friendly, attractive associates were trained to greet customers and measure their bra sizes.

Women were willing to pay $50 for bras because the luxury experience made their lingerie purchases feel like investments.

This attention to customer service helped Victoria's Secret overtake competitors like Frederick's of Hollywood and post record sales even during an economic downturn.

AdoreMe CEO Morgan Hermand-Waiche told Business Insider that "people are so tired of high prices and slow-fashion from Victoria's Secret."

But Victoria's Secret's sales suggest differently: The brand recently reported a 6% increase in the second quarter, on top of a 10% increase last year. That's among the best in the retail industry.

Women don't line up at Victoria's Secret because it's cheap or has an ever-changing assortment of merchandise.

They trust the brand and feel like a trip to a Victoria's Secret store is a treat.

Victoria's Secret offers an experience that e-commerce retailers simply can't compete with.

Kate Upton was just named Model Of The Year at the Style Awards.

The honor puts her in the ranks of other fashion favorites like Christie Brinkley and Joan Smalls.

But just one year ago, Upton's future as a model seemed uncertain.

The industry speculated that Upton would be stuck with the identity of a swimsuit model forever.

She moved beyond her Sports Illustrated cover and has since been courted by Vogue and major fashion labels.

Upton hit the modeling scene in the 2011 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition. She was featured in body paint.

The next year, she appeared on the magazine's cover. Her spread was seen as instantly iconic.

She also walked the runway for a swimwear line. It seemed Upton had found her calling as a swimsuit model.

Miranda Kerr Is Noticeably Absent From The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Line-Up

Today, Victoria's Secret announced the line-up for its famous annual fashion show.

Familiar faces like Adriana Lima, Karlie Kloss, and Alessandra Ambrosio will appear on the runway at this year's show, which will air December 10 on CBS.

Noticeably absent was longtime Angel Miranda Kerr, Vogue reports

In April, Kerr announced she was leaving the brand after six years as an Angel.

Kerr said she was focusing on being a mother to her young son, and on other contracts with brands ranging from Kora Organics skincare to Reebok.

But reports claimed that Victoria's Secret dropped Kerr because of her "difficult" reputation and because she wasn't selling as much lingerie as other models.

Victoria's Secret later put up a united front with Kerr, saying that she would be walking in the brand's annual Fashion Show.

Her absence from the line-up, which an astonishing 9.3 million people watched last year, suggests that her split with the brand was less than amicable.

Victoria's Secret Workers Fought The Company For Better Pay — And Won

victoria's secret workers

A group of Victoria's Secret employees in New York City took on the company for better pay and hours, and won.

Debbra Alexis told CNNMoney that she was making an hourly wage of $9.93 at the chain's Herald Square store. Her hours ranged from 10 to 30 per week, making it impossible to budget.

Alexis found that other employees had the same complaints, so in June they presented their employer with a letter of demands.

Victoria's Secret didn't answer the letter, so Alexis sought help from the Retail Action Project and posted a petition on Change.org

"The majority of our store’s approximately 700 workers struggle because we’re classified as part-time – only managers are considered full-time," Alexis wrote in the letter. "Since we don’t have guaranteed minimum hours, our hours are slashed without notice – leaving us unable to pay our rent, succeed at school, get promotions, or take care of our families."

The petition received more than 800 signatures, leading Victoria's Secret to notice Alexis' pleas.

The company announced last month that all Herald Square employees would get raises of between $1 and $2 an hour, depending on experience.

Alexis recently left the company to work for a non-profit.

Victoria's Secret declined to comment for the CNNMoney story.

The Casting Director For The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Describes The 'Terrifying' Audition Process For Models

The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show is one of the most sought-after gigs in the modeling business.

But the lingerie brand's audition process is "terrifying," even for the most seasoned models, creative director Sophia Neophitou-Apostolou told Vogue

The models are cast provisionally by one director, but they still have to face a gauntlet:

"The final decision is made by the whole team, sitting at this long table in a room with really harsh lighting and they have to walk towards us and away from us,"Neophitou-Apostolou told Vogue."They all have to do it—even the contracted girls—and it's incredibly nerve-wracking for them."

Neophitou also explained why some beautiful women don't make the cut.

"It's really like being an Olympian—they have to be in peak condition," she told Vogue. "It's not about being thin or anything like that—it's about being ready to perform and be the best you can be in that moment."

Victoria's Secret executives rely on one specific quality to sell underwear, Richard Habberley at DNA Model Management told Women's Wear Daily last year.

“The merchants drive the decisions on the Angels. They [Victoria’s Secret] try the girls out, and certain girls sell product. They’re women that appeal to other women. And they’re special because they never appear in men’s magazines. Once you start to do that, they become threatening [to potential female customers],” said Habberley.

Victoria's Secret Model Sued For Allegedly Trashing Her New York Apartment

A Victoria's Secret model and her millionaire husband are being sued by a landlord for allegedly trashing their fancy loft apartment.

Julie Ordon and David Mimran are also accused of not paying the $32,000 rent for two months and underpaying for the six months before that, reports The New York Daily News

The leasing company, Allerand LLC, alleged "unspeakable damage" to the furnished West Village unit in court papers filed with Manhattan Supreme Court.

"They left a handmade Napalese carpet in the dining room torn and stained after using it as a base for a cordoned off play area for their children," The Daily News writes, citing the landlord's attorney. "He said the silk covered Art Deco dining chairs also were stained and nicked."

The couple is even accused of gluing plastic devices to the corners of antique tables to protect their small children.

The landlord is seeking about $420,000 in damages.

Ordon and Mimran didn't respond to The Daily News' request for comment.

In addition to appearing in Victoria's Secret catalogs, Ordon has appeared in Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue and Chanel ads.
